Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Oldham Athletic
Tranmere Rovers kept their unbeaten start intact with a 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic in League Two on Saturday. Dylan Jones opened the scoring in the seventeenth minute before Joe Ironside added a penalty in the eighty-second. The hosts sit fourth with nine points from five games, while Oldham drop to tenth on seven points.
Jones gave Tranmere the lead after seventeen minutes, finishing from close range when the visitors had left space behind their defensive line. To be fair, Oldham had looked comfortable enough in possession but failed to convert pressure into chances. Tranmere's attack was sharper — four shots on target from eight attempts, compared to six attempts on goal that yielded nothing for the visitors.
The second half brought more substitutions than goals. Elliott Nevitt and Thomas Hill came on together at the break, followed by Zane Okoro in the fifty-sixth minute. Tom Conlon joined in the sixty-first before Tranmere brought on Charlie Jay Whitaker and Dylan Jones himself in the sixty-eighth. By then the game was settled, and Oldham were chasing shadows.
Ironside's penalty in the eighty-second minute sealed the result. Tranmere had fouled sixteen times across the match, giving away too many cheap opportunities, but Joe Ironside made no mistake from the spot. The hosts finished with three yellow cards, including one for Luke McGee in the seventy-ninth and Thomas Ince in the ninetieth.
Oldham's 52 per cent possession meant little on the day. They registered ten corners and one hundred and eight attacks, yet only managed six shots on target. Tranmere, with 48 per cent possession, were more clinical — their shot accuracy sat at 44 per cent compared to Oldham's 27 per cent. Things came to a head when the visitors switched off at a set piece, and Ironside took his chance.
The result keeps Tranmere in the mix at the top end of the table. They have not lost in five games — two wins and three draws — while Oldham's record of two victories, one draw and two defeats leaves them searching for consistency. The old head settled them down, and Tranmere showed what happens when you let the game flow without panic.
