The Estadio Campeones Olímpicos, in the city of Florida rather than in Montevideo itself, holds 5,124 people and has been Boston River's home since 2019.

The name traces back further and stranger than most: Juan Deri, the founding president, ran a tailoring shop called Sastrería Boston and supported the Argentine club River Plate, so the club he registered on 20 February 1939 carries both a trade and a borrowed allegiance in its title. The nickname El Sastre, the Tailor, still points at the shop rather than at any player.

For decades the club existed on the margins of the game it now plays at the highest level. It joined the Uruguayan Football Association in 1953, worked up through the Extra B and Extra A divisions in 1954 and 1956, and then, in 1981, was expelled from AUF competitions over internal problems. Eighteen years passed before it returned, in 1999, and seven more before the amateur league title of 2006 opened the door back into professional football.

The 2015–16 Segunda División title changed what the club was. Boston River went up to the Primera División for the first time in its history. Federico Rodríguez top-scored that promotion season and put his name into the club's best-remembered result, a 5-1 win over River Plate in which he scored four. The high point since has been third place in the 2024 championship, the best league finish Boston River has recorded, and two qualifications for the Copa Libertadores, in 2023 and 2025.

None of that has come with a major trophy — no league title, no cup.
