Melo sits closer to the Brazilian border than to Montevideo. Cerro Largo F.C. was set up on 19 November 2002 to change that, and it remains one of the youngest professional clubs in the country. It plays in the Primera División and returned to the Copa Sudamericana in 2024 at the first stage.

The years in between explain the club better than any single season. Promotion came in 2007, relegation in 2011, then an immediate return through the promotion play-offs; another drop followed in 2013/14. The play-offs of 2015 and 2016 were both lost. What ended that pattern was the Segunda División Profesional title in 2018. The season after coming up, Cerro Largo finished third in the Primera División and qualified for the Copa Libertadores for the first time, entering the 2020 edition at the second stage.

Home is the Estadio Arquitecto Antonio Eleuterio Ubilla, a municipal ground holding 9,000. The shirt is white with blue vertical stripes, black away, which is why the side is known locally as the blue-and-white outfit. The nickname Arachán comes from a tree that grows in the region.

The local derby is with Melo Wanderers. The fixture that carries the bigger name, the Clásico del Este, is against Sarandí Universitario, a club based not in Cerro Largo but in Rivera.

Staying in the Primera División is the immediate business; the 2019 third place remains the high-water mark.
