Palmeiras had won the Copa Libertadores three months earlier, and in April 2021 Defensa y Justicia beat them on penalties to take the Recopa Sudamericana — after the Copa Sudamericana of 2020. Neither came with a domestic title behind it: in Argentina's championships the club has won nothing.
