HK Kópavogur

He came up through HK Kópavogur, the football branch of a Kópavogur sports society founded in 1970 that only organised its own knattspyrnudeild in 1992. It was not the club's only export: Hólmar Örn Eyjólfsson debuted at sixteen in 2007 and went on to West Ham and Rosenborg, and Sveinn Aron Guðjohnsen, son of Eiður, followed the same path into the national side from 2015.

The club plays in red and white and is known locally as HK-ingar. Since 2013 its home has been Kórinn, an indoor sports centre opened in 2007; before that, matches were played outdoors at Kópavogsvöllur, which held 3,009. Across town sits Breiðablik, the club's closest rival, and the meeting between the two is known as the Kópavogsderby.

HK's honours belong to the lower divisions: three titles in the third tier, 2. deild karla, in 1997, 2002 and 2013, and two in the fourth tier, 3. deild karla, in 1992 and 2001. In the Icelandic Cup, the club has reached the quarter-finals three times, in 2004, 2005 and 2009, and gone no further. A top-flight title, or a cup run past that stage, is still something HK Kópavogur has not managed.
