Rúnar Páll Sigmundsson walked into Stjarnan's academy at eight and, apart from a spell away in the mid-1990s, never really left. He played for the club through 1991–1992 and again from 1995 to 2003, took over as head coach in 2014, and stayed in the job until 2021.
His first season in charge was the one that changed what the club could claim. Stjarnan won the Úrvalsdeild karla in 2014 without losing a league match, finishing on 52 points — a record, and a first Icelandic title. He added the Icelandic Cup in 2018.
Between those two came the Super Cup in 2015, against KR. Stjarnan won it again in 2019, that time on penalties against Valur, 6–5.
Outside Iceland, the club is better known for what happens after the goals go in. The squad's staged celebrations — the fishing trip, the bicycle, the Christmas scene — travelled further than most of its results, and they became part of how Icelandic football is described abroad.
The home ground carries two names. Officially it is Stjörnuvöllur; it also trades as Samsung völlurinn, the Samsung Stadium. It holds 1,400 people, 990 of them seated and 410 standing. Garðabær itself sits just south of Reykjavík, close enough to the capital to be one of its suburbs.
