Thor Akureyri

The two clubs once shared a roof, splitting into Þór and KA only in 1974 after decades run together as Íþróttabandalag Akureyri.

The club traces back to 1915, when Friðrik Einarsson, barely into his teens, gathered a group of boys aged 12 to 15 on Oddeyri street and called the team Íþróttafélag Oddeyringa, Þór. He became its first chairman at around 15 years old.

Silverware has mostly stayed out of reach at the top level. Þór has never won the Úrvalsdeild and lost the one cup final it reached, going down 0–2 to KR in 2011. The club has taken the 1. deild karla title three times, in 2001, 2012 and, most recently, 2025.

The name most associated with the club belongs to Aron Gunnarsson , who came through the Þór academy as a teenager, played for the first team in 2005–06, then returned twice more, in 2024 and again in 2026.

Home matches are played at Þórsvöllur, a ground that holds 2,000, with an indoor hall called Boginn used for training and the occasional fixture.
