Sydney FC's second team spends its season in the New South Wales Premier League, a step below the A-League but a proving ground for players still working their way toward Sydney FC's first team. There is no silverware to chase at this level, and none has come yet — the honours sit further down the pathway, in the youth and second-tier competitions the club has already worked through.

Matches are played at Ilinden Sports Centre in Rockdale, a ground with room under cover for 1,000 of its roughly 6,000 capacity. It is a modest setting for a side that carries the parent club's sky blue and navy and answers to the same nickname, the Sky Blues, and it says something about the team's purpose: development, not spectacle. Sydney FC itself was founded on 8 September 2004, and this side exists as its structural extension rather than a separate entity — there is no founding date of its own, only a first appearance in the current NPL NSW format in 2020, in a match against Western Sydney Wanderers II.

Before reaching that senior state competition, the pathway had already produced results. The National Youth League title came three times, in 2008–09, 2013–14 and 2015–16, and in 2016 the side also topped NPL NSW 2, the second tier, taking both the championship and the Premiers Plate. Those wins belong to the age-group and lower-division years rather than to the current campaign, but they mark the level this production line has cleared before.

Regular opponents include the reserve sides of other A-League clubs, among them Western Sydney Wanderers II and St George City FA II — fixtures that keep the emphasis on games played rather than trophies won.

3 National Youth League titles trace the path this squad is still meant to walk.
