The club traces back to a side called Jabatos de Nuevo León, which ran into money trouble from 1957 onward. The university stepped in, and on 7 March 1960 the Patronato of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León took the team over, renamed it Tigres and gave it the gold and blue of the university. It took until 1967 for the name Club Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León to become official, the same year the side reached the top flight for the first time.

Eight Liga MX titles have followed since: two in the old long-season format, 1977–78 and 1981–82, then a run of short-tournament wins from 2011 onward, most recently Clausura 2023. The 2020 CONCACAF Champions League stands apart from that list — a 1-0 final win over LA Galaxy gave Tigres their only continental crown, after three runner-up finishes in the same competition across 2016, 2017 and 2019 had left the trophy just out of reach each time.

Home games are played at Estadio Universitario, known locally as El Volcán.
