The club itself started somewhere else entirely. Clube de Regatas Vasco da Gama was founded on 21 August 1898 by Portuguese immigrants and Brazilians as a rowing club, with no football section at all. Football only arrived in 1915, when Vasco merged with Lusitânia Sport Club, and the team made its competitive debut in the third division of the Rio state championship the following year. By 1933 Vasco was among the clubs pushing Brazilian football toward professionalism, a stance consistent with a club that had already shown it would break with convention.
Home is Estádio São Januário, opened in 1927 and owned by the club. The ground still carries the name of Roberto Dinamite, the club's all-time top scorer with 311 goals across more than 700 appearances between 1971 and 1992.
Four Brazilian championships, a Copa do Brasil in 2011 and 24 Rio state titles fill out the record.
