BO Ostrava

Antonín Nowak stands in goal for a side that most of the Czech hockey league does not recognise as a rival, because it is not one — it is a university team, built out of the University of Ostrava and the VŠB–Technical University of Ostrava, and Nowak's nomination for the US College Tour is the kind of thing that happens when a student squad takes itself seriously enough to send a goaltender abroad.

The club took its name and its colours, black and orange, from Ostrava's steel trade, and it took something closer than a name from HC Vítkovice Ridera, the professional club nicknamed the Oceláři — Vítkovice Steel signed on as general partner, lending sponsorship without folding the two sides into one. BO Ostrava joined the Univerzitní liga ledního hokeje for that league's first season, in 2019/2020, a year after it was founded.

Home games are played at the RT TORAX ARENA in the Poruba district, a rink that held the city's winter sports long before the university side existed under its old name, Zimní stadion Ostrava-Poruba, and that seats 2,603 of its 4,200 capacity. When the calendar squeezes it out, the team shifts to the smaller Multifunkční hala Ostravar Arény, a hall built for 502.

Forwards David Pastor and Pavel Makovec carry the attacking end of a roster drawn from two campuses rather than a scouting network, which is the plainer way to say what a university league is for. The season ahead is the same as any other in the ULLH: fill the fixture list against the country's other student sides and give Nowak a defence worth playing in front of.
