In the autumn of 2015, Vienna Basket turned up to the Austrian Super Cup as the team that hadn't even won the league the previous season, and left with the trophy anyway, beating the double champions Güssing Knights 77-65 — the first time in the competition's history that a vice-champion had taken the cup off a reigning double winner.

The club, formed in 2001, beat the Oberwart Gunners 3-2 in a final series for its first Austrian Championship. The second came in 2021-22, a 3-1 win over Swans Gmunden, and that same year the club added the Austrian Cup as well, seeing off Oberwart again, this time 92-70.

The two sides sit close enough that Klosterneuburg, though technically in Lower Austria, counts as part of the Vienna area, and their meetings are billed as the Donau-Derby.

The leap sits on the shoulders of Dragan Bajić , the Bosnian coach now running the bench in Vienna after building his name at Igokea, where he was named ABA League Coach of the Season.
