The Austrian Basketball Superliga occupies the highest tier of the national basketball pyramid, operating under the direct organization of Basketball Austria. Established in the summer of 2019, the competition replaced the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga, which had functioned since 1947. The inaugural 2019–20 campaign was abandoned due to the pandemic, with the first completed season following in 2020–21.
The current structure features eleven teams engaged in a round-robin regular season. Following this phase, the league divides into two distinct groups. The top six clubs contest the championship, while the remaining five compete to avoid relegation. Advancement to the playoffs is determined by overall standing, with the top eight teams progressing to best-of-five series.
Relegation involves a direct challenge against the second-tier Basketball Zweite Liga. The bottom two teams of the Superliga face the leading pair from the lower division in a playoff format. This system ensures a clear pathway for movement between the tiers.
Significant changes accompanied the league's launch, including centralized administration and new media rights agreements with Sky Sport and ORF. A notable early incident occurred in 2019 when the Fürstenfeld Panthers were denied a license despite participating in the previous season. Historically, UBSC Wien holds the record for most titles, securing eleven championships during the Bundesliga era. In the Superliga period, Swans Gmunden and Oberwart Gunners have emerged as successful entities. Kapfenberg Bulls claimed the 2025–26 title, marking their eighth Austrian championship overall.
The competition serves as the premier domestic stage for professional basketball in Austria, drawing attention through its split-stage format and competitive balance. The ongoing development of the league reflects the efforts of Basketball Austria to modernize the sport within the country.
