Wels

Raoul Korner had been in charge for four seasons when, in 2008-09, he took Flyers Wels past Swans Gmunden in the final and delivered the club's sole Austrian championship. The title remains its high-water mark: the league final has come around twice more, in 2005-06 and 2015-16, and both times Wels finished second.

The club traces back to a 2000 merger of Union Wels and ABC Sparkasse Wels, first playing as WBC Kraftwerk Wels and then, from 2009, under Raiffeisen sponsorship. In 2017 the entity was wound up and re-founded as Raiffeisen Flyers Wels, a restart built around the youth pipeline it runs with FCN Baskets Wels — the route through which Luca Dittrich came up through every age group to the first team.

Cup football has treated Wels better: three Austrian Cups, in 2005-06, 2023-24 and 2025-26, the second of them won under Sebastian Waser, who doubles as sporting director. A single Supercup, from 2016 against Oberwart Gunners, sits alongside them. Andro Knego, already a name in Croatian basketball, spent his final season as a player at Wels in 1996-97 before retiring; NBA-experienced imports such as Ricky Moore and Chase Jeter have since passed through a roster built to compete in the 1,750-seat Raiffeisen Arena, small even by domestic standards.

The derby with Swans Gmunden, the Oberösterreich-Derby, is the fixture that matters most locally — the same opponent Korner beat in the 2009 final. A second championship is the one thing seventeen years of cup and supercup silverware still has not brought.
