Kapfenberg Bulls

It began in Aflenz, not Kapfenberg, in 1976, as a department of the gymnastics club Turnverein Aflenz. A sponsorship from Sparkasse Aflenz in 1983 renamed it, and promotion to the Bundesliga followed in 1991. In 1993 the side became the Basket Bears, a name it carried until 1996, when the whole operation moved to Kapfenberg under the Kapfenberger Sportvereinigung. The bear lasted until 2004, when a deal with the sponsor Superfund produced both the current name and its opposite: a bull replacing a bear as the club crest.

Under that name the club has done its best work. Between 2001 and 2004 it won the Austrian Superliga four years running, then added three more titles from 2017 to 2019, along with five Austrian Cups in the same stretch. Michael Schrittwieser , son of the club's founder, coached through much of that run, which puts the family that started the team in Aflenz in the middle of the one it built in Kapfenberg. The Sporthalle Walfersam holds 1,000, a size that has not stopped the Bulls reaching the Alpe Adria Cup Final Four in 2024, where BC Timișoara ended their run in the semi-final.
