MVV Maastricht completed a remarkable comeback at the Philips Stadion on Friday evening, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in the Eerste Divisie's second round. The result leaves the visitors in second place with 13 points, while the hosts remain rooted to 16th on just four.
M. Hofland's own goal in the 15th minute gave Eindhoven a early advantage, but S. Van Dessel soon levelled the score from the spot. He converted two penalties in quick succession at 45 minutes and 45+4, leaving the visitors with a lead they would not surrender.
M. de Jonge pulled one back for Eindhoven in the 51st minute, and for a while it looked as though the home side might salvage something. But MVV hit back with three goals in the final minutes: O. Dumont and J. Pawirodihardjo both found the net at the hour mark, with Pawirodihardjo adding a third in stoppage time at 90+3.
Statistics tell a story of wasted opportunity for Eindhoven. They recorded 87 attacks and 11 shots on target combined with their accuracy figure of 0.14, yet could only muster two shots on target that counted. MVV were sharper, landing seven shots on target from 13 attempts with a 0.44 accuracy rate, and they held 53 per cent possession throughout.
By then the table had shifted in a way few would have predicted. MVV's four wins and one draw put them comfortably in the automatic promotion places, while Eindhoven's solitary victory from five games leaves them needing the points badly if they want to avoid a relegation fight.
