Match report

Firpo edged past Placense 1:0 in the Apertura's sixth round on Saturday night, a hard-fought result in a match where chances were scarce but the decisive moment arrived early. O. Ceren took credit for the home side's goal, though X. Garcia's own goal at the same minute did the real damage, and the visitors never found a way back into the contest.

By then the game had settled into a rhythm neither side could break. Firpo pressed forward with more intent, but Placense held their nerve in defence and let the game flow into a midfield battle rather than open space. The visitors enjoyed slightly more possession—52 per cent to 48—but possession alone does not win matches, and Firpo made their limited opportunities count.

Shots tell the same story. Firpo fired nine attempts off target against four on target, while Placense managed four off target and two on target. The home side's attacking volume was higher, but the final third was where the difference lay, and Ceren's strike at the 18th minute proved enough to put the game to bed early.

Discipline was reasonably even. Three yellow cards for Firpo against two for Placense, no red cards for either side, and the match stayed clean enough for both managers to work with the tactical adjustments they wanted. The pitch cut up badly in patches, but neither team used that as an excuse for the result.

The standings now shift slightly. Firpo sit fourth with 11 points from six games—three wins, two draws, one loss—while Placense remain seventh with nine points from seven matches. The gap between them is two points, and Firpo have a game in hand.

For Firpo the result extends their unbeaten run, having won three of their last five and drawn the other two. Placense's recent form has been uneven, and this loss means they are now three points behind the teams above them. Both sides will be looking to build on the foundation they have laid so far in the Apertura.
