Match report

Rotherham United and York played out a 1-1 draw in the second matchday of League Two's 2026-27 season at the New York Stadium on Saturday. Ewan Otoo opened the scoring for the hosts before Alex Newby equalised for the visitors, and neither side could find a winner despite fresh legs coming on in the second half. To be fair, it was a game where the result felt balanced from the start.

The opening ten minutes carried a certain nervous energy that dissipated when Otoo struck in the 20th minute. He finished a move that had worked its way down the left flank, and the home supporters rose as one. By then the visitors had already looked comfortable enough in possession to know they weren't going to be pushed back.

Newby's equaliser in the 40th minute came from a different sort of chance - a loose ball in the penalty area that the visitors' inside forward kept his head up to meet. The goal was clean, the finish was true, and Rotherham had to regroup before the break. The hosts changed shape at the break, probably hoping to catch York on the counter, but it didn't pay for a sloppy opening.

The substitutions came thick and fast after the interval. Zak Johnson made way for Fábio Tavares, then Ossama Ashley replaced Mark Kitching in quick succession. Alex Hunt and Lenny Agbaire arrived together, followed by Paul Mullin and Joe Felix, and the game took on a different rhythm altogether. And here's the thing - the match didn't really open up despite all that movement.

Rotherham had 41 per cent possession and managed only two shots on target from seven attempts inside the penalty area. Their shots accuracy sat at 20 per cent, which tells you everything about the quality of the chances they created. York, meanwhile, registered five shots on target and kept the ball longer, but they couldn't convert the advantage.

The statistics don't tell you about the yellow cards that appeared at the end - Jili Buyabu for Rotherham and Brandon Cover for York in the dying moments. Both teams had enough fouls between them to suggest the game was getting a bit scrappy, but neither side had the legs to press for a winner. The table goes out of the window in these games, but Rotherham remain 13th with five points while York sit seventh on seven.
