Vancouver, 24 October 2014: Costa Rica went into the CONCACAF Women's Championship final against the United States and lost 0–6. The scoreline mattered less than the ticket that came with it. In the opening group match against Spain, Raquel Rodríguez scored the country's first goal at a World Cup; the match finished level, as did the next one, against South Korea.

The team has spent most of its life measuring itself against neighbours rather than against Europe. Gold at the Central American Games in San José in 2013 and again in Managua four years later, bronze at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1999 and Lima in 2019. Matches with Panama carry the most heat of any fixture on the calendar, though the two have never given the meeting a name.
