HK Kopavogur

Arnar Birkir Björnsson spent 2025 collecting the title HK gives its own: Sportsman of the Year. That overlap — a small club feeding the Icelandic team while still winning at home — is the pattern the volleyball section has followed since Júlíus Arnarsson and Albert N. Valdemarsson set it up in 1974, four years after the parent club itself was founded in Kópavogur.

The men's side has taken the national championship nine times. Between those runs the team reached the European Champions League in the 1995/96 season. The women followed a similar rhythm rather than a shared one — league titles in 1995, 2010, 2015 and 2017, and again in 2019/20, a season the pandemic cut short with HK still top of the table.

Kórinn came later, seating up to 2,000, and Afturelding, the other club in the Greater Reykjavík area, has been the nearest thing to a fixture worth circling ever since — without either side ever giving the meeting a name of its own.

Heba Sól Stefánsdóttir carried the HK name furthest afield, playing for the national team before moving on to clubs in Croatia and Switzerland — proof that a Kópavogur upbringing could travel, even if most of what the club has won stayed exactly where it was made.
