Throttur Reykjavik

The parent club, Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur, grew out of a Reykjavik neighbourhood organisation formed in August 1949, and volleyball arrived there in 1974 as its own department, distinct from the football side in everything down to the shirts: green and white rather than red and white.

Throttur's run through the 1980s set the tone for what followed. The club took the Icelandic Championship seven years running from 1981 to 1987, a stretch matched by an equally busy cup record over the same years, and returned to the top of the table again at the turn of the millennium and once more in 2009. Fourteen cup wins and thirteen league titles put the volleyball department among the sport's established names in Iceland, even as the football side it split from stayed the more visible half of the club to outsiders.

Matches are played at Laugardalshöll, the indoor arena in the Laugardalur district that seats 2,300 for sport. The fixture that still draws the crowd is against Valur, the derby that has carried more weight locally than the club's meetings with Afturelding.

The current squad carries a noticeably Polish accent, with Mateusz Ruciński and Kacper Kędra among the imports who found a way through Icelandic defences last season. But it is Alexander Stefánsson, homegrown and still the player most associated with Throttur's shirt, who supporters in Laugardalur mention first.
