Five Finnish Cup finals ended the same way for Ilves — 1991, 1997, 2010, 2011, 2014 — and the trophy never once came back to Tampere. In the league the nearest they got was second, in 1992 and again in 2016, with three third-place finishes scattered through the early 1990s in between.
The women's section was formed in 1975, when Ilves-Kissat merged with Tampellan Palloilijat; the wider Ilves club dates to 1931, but this team's own history begins at the merger. One season in the top flight was followed by relegation and thirteen years outside it before Ilves returned in 1989 and settled back among the elite.
Sanna Talonen played 103 times for Finland after coming through the club; goalkeeper Johanna Lindell won 72 caps.
The 2024 season finished at the bottom of the table and sent Ilves down to Kansallinen Ykkönen, where they spent 2025 trying to work their way back up. Across the city, TPV supply the opposition for the Tampere derby.
