Trinidad and Tobago are the neighbours the Reggae Girlz measure themselves against. Haiti sit close behind in that reckoning — the very first fixture Jamaica played, on 17 April 1991, was against them.

The team exists because Andrea Lewis founded the Jamaican Women's Football Association in 1987, four years before the national side took the field. In Australia and New Zealand in 2023 they reached the Round of 16.

Khadija Shaw came up through the Jamaican under-17 and under-20 sides. She now plays for Paris Saint-Germain, and took the Golden Boot at the 2022 UEFA Women's Euro. Around her the squad draws on players who grew up elsewhere — Cheyna Matthews, Havana Solaun and Chinyelu Asher all came through youth systems in the United States before switching allegiance to Jamaica.

Runners-up in the CFU Women's Caribbean Cup in 2014.

Home is the National Stadium in Kingston, 35,000 seats in black, green and gold, the ground Jamaicans call Independence Park.
