The most charged fixture on the calendar runs through Yekaterinburg. None of those rivalries were built in Saratov itself.

It began in Balakovo, roughly a hundred kilometres from Saratov, where Vyacheslav Ivanov put together a team called Sinyaya Ptitsa on the strength of the Irgiz concern. The nuclear plant that gave the town its industry took over as sponsor in 1997, and the renamed Balakovo AES had its best years under that banner: the Russian Cup in 1999, three straight bronze medals in the Superliga from 2003 to 2005, and a run to the CEV Cup final in 2005 that ended in silver. Relegation broke that spell, and in 2009 the club shed the Balakovo name and shifted its base to Saratov itself. A boardroom dispute in 2018 forced a fresh legal registration as Proton-Saratov, though the club counts its history as unbroken back to 1988.

Yuri Marichev has run the team since 2019, doubling as president, and it was under him that Proton returned to the Superliga podium with bronze in 2023. Yana Shcherban came up through the club's own academy.
