Dinamo-Metar goes into the current Superliga campaign carrying the momentum of its best modern run: in 2022/23 the Chelyabinsk side beat Dinamo-Ak Bars Kazan in the quarterfinals before falling to Dynamo Moscow in the semifinals and losing the bronze-medal match to Proton.

The team traces back to 1972, when it played as Tekhnolog on the basis of the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute, and it changed its name repeatedly over the following years — Politekhnik, ChMS, Metar, Avtodor-Metar — before settling on Dinamo-Metar in 2017. The club reached the Soviet Higher League in 1982 and finished sixth in both 1985 and 1991.

Since then the story has been one of survival rather than trophies.

Olga Fornaleva captains the side now, and the academy behind her, SDYUSSHOR Yunost-Metar, has kept the club stocked from within. Home games are played in front of 1,500 at the Metar-Sport Sports Complex on Cherkasskaya Street.

Beating Dinamo-Ak Bars in the 2022/23 quarterfinal was the kind of result that used to belong to Dinamo-Metar's own golden years.
