In 1966 the Sverdlov transport engineering plant formed a women's team called Trud. It kept that name when the Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Combine (NTMK) added its initials as sponsor in 2000.

The run that made the club's reputation had two parts. Uralochka won five Soviet championships in a row from 1978 to 1982, and in the middle of that spell took the European Champions Cup in 1981, 1982 and 1983. After a gap they won the Soviet title in each of the six seasons from 1986 to 1991.

Europe added eight Champions Cup or Champions League titles in all, the last in 1995, and a Cup Winners' Cup in 1986. At the 1992 World Club Championship the team finished third. The Russian Cup is the one domestic trophy it has never won, and in 2026 it finished second.

Home fixtures are divided between the 5,000-seat Uralochka arena in Yekaterinburg and the Metallurg-Forum sports complex in Nizhny Tagil, the home of the combine that sponsors the team. The club also runs a volleyball academy named after N. V. Karpol.
