In October 1989 a sports organisation run by Guillermo Valentiner bought the club for 5,000 bolívars. That same year the rights of the professional side were merged with those of an amateur team founded in 1967 by a group of enthusiasts at a house in San Román, and the result took the name Caracas Fútbol Club. Before the merger the professional half had been Yamaha FC, then Caracas-Yamaha FC, a side that won the second division at the first attempt in 1983–84 and went up.

The first league title arrived in 1991–92 under Manuel Plasencia, who took the club to three more. The longer stretch belongs to Noel Sanvicente: five championships between 2002–03 and 2008–09, and the club's best run in the Copa Libertadores. Twelve league titles in all, the last of them in the 2019 Apertura, which makes Caracas the most decorated side in Venezuelan football. Five Copa Venezuela wins sit alongside them, the earliest in 1987, two years before the club as it now exists was assembled.

Home is the Estadio Olímpico de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, holding 20,900. The colours are red and black in stripes, and the supporters call themselves La Sangre Rojinegra; the nickname Los Rojos del Ávila points at the mountain standing over the city.

The club has fed the national side for years. Josef Martínez started here in 2010 and went on to become the leading scorer in MLS history. Roberto Rosales, Alejandro Guerra and Ronald Vargas also left for Europe from Caracas.

The fixture that matters most is against Deportivo Táchira in San Cristóbal, and it is known as El Clásico Moderno. Nearer home, the Derby de la Capital brings UCV FC and Atlético Venezuela.
