Deportes La Serena

La Serena sits on Chile's Norte Chico coast in the Coquimbo region, a place known for papaya groves as much as for anything else. Club de Deportes La Serena grew out of a merger with a local amateur side, Deportivo Sindempart, and the new team took shape on 9 December 1955.

The badge settled on granate and white, with orange kept as the accent that ties the shirt back to the papaya trade and to Los Papayeros. La Serena has spent much of its history moving between the top flight and the second division rather than sitting still in either. The club won promotion in 1957, 1987, 1996 and again in 2024, each time climbing back out of Primera B. The best of it came early: third place in the Chilean championship in 1958 and 1963, and a Copa de Preparación win in 1960, when La Serena beat Santiago Wanderers 4-1 in the final.

Wilson Fre remains the name attached to the club's best scoring years, a forward who came through the ranks and returned across two spells in the late 1980s and again in 1996, finishing among the leading marksmen in the history of Chile's second division.

Home games are played at Estadio La Portada, which holds 18,500.
