The VTB United League stands as the premier professional basketball competition within Russia. It operates under a closed franchise structure where participation is determined by administrative invitation rather than sporting merit. Clubs must meet specific financial stability and arena criteria, including a minimum capacity of 3,000 seats, to secure their place in the league. Since the 2013–14 season, the competition holds the official status of the Russian National Championship. While it originally included teams from Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus, current participation is predominantly Russian, although international expansion plans exist for the upcoming season. The 2025–26 edition features eleven clubs, with numbers set to rise to twelve in 2026–27. The competitive format involves a regular season followed by a playoff stage. The league also differs significantly from the Russian Cup, which serves as a secondary knockout tournament without a guaranteed path to European competitions.
