The Ligat Ha'Al Women stands as the premier tier of women's basketball in Israel. Officially known as the Israeli Women's Basketball Premier League, it operates under the governance of the Israel Basketball Association and the Women's Premier League Management Committee. That administrative body was established in 2011 to professionalize the domestic game. The competition features ten clubs contesting for the national title.
The season structure divides into two distinct phases after the regular campaign. A double round-robin regular season determines the standings, leading to a split. The top six teams enter a single round-robin group to secure playoff spots. The remaining four sides play for status, with one club dropping to the Liga Leumit. The upper group’s top four advance to best-of-five playoff finals. Promotion from the second tier is decided through a Final Four tournament, contingent upon financial and facility approvals.
Elitzur Tel Aviv holds the record for most titles with fourteen, a run that included a fourteen-year winning streak between 1977 and 1990. Elitzur Ramla follows closely with thirteen championships. The current champion is Maccabi Bnot Ashdod, having claimed the 2024/25 title. The league operates under a specific roster model requiring two Israeli players on the court at all times, alongside a two-plus-two foreign player allowance.
State funding via the 'Athena Project' supports the league following a 2016 Supreme Court ruling on budget discrimination. This financial structure distinguishes it from the fully professional men's equivalent, which utilizes four foreign player slots. The competition is broadcast on the Sports Channel, providing visibility for the national teams.
