Athena Women

Smárinn seats a thousand for basketball in Kópavogur that became Aþena's ground when the club reached the Úrvalsdeild kvenna for the 2024–25 season, its first appearance in Iceland's top division. The club had first tried to rent Íþróttamiðstöð Álftaness in nearby Garðabær, only for the agreement to fall through after Stjarnan, a rival club, objected; Aþena ended up playing home games at Íþróttahúsið við Vesturgötu in Akranes instead, a considerable distance from Breiðholt, the Reykjavík district where the club was founded on 19 June 2019.

The team went back down to the second tier after that single top-flight season, but not before Sienna Martin scored 24 points in a playoff game against KR in April 2024. Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson has coached the side since 2021 and was one of the subjects of the documentary Raise the Bar (Hækkum rána) that same year.

The club has not won a league title or the Icelandic Cup. Its badge carries an owl and the motto "Quod Obstat Viae Fit Via" — what blocks the road becomes the road.
