Stjarnan Women

Ásgarður sits in Garðabær, a modest hall holding around a thousand people, and it is where Stjörnukonur have played through every version of the club they have been. The team did not grow out of Garðabær's own basketball tradition so much as walk into it in 2009, when the entire women's roster at Ármann switched allegiance to Stjarnan after growing tired of what their old club offered them in training facilities.

The basketball side sits inside Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, a multi-sports club founded in 1960, and it wears the parent club's yellow and green. Its own path has been anything but steady. Two 1. deild kvenna titles, in 2010–11 and again in 2022–23, mark the two times Stjörnukonur have fought their way into the Úrvalsdeild kvenna, Iceland's top flight. Between those two promotions came 2019, when the club pulled itself out of the top division after losing several key players, registered instead for the second tier, then withdrew from that too over coaching trouble and sat out the 2019–20 season entirely before starting the climb back up.

That same 2019 side had reached an Icelandic Cup final, built in part around Danielle Rodriguez, the American guard who arrived in 2016 and was named the league's Foreign Player of the Year in 2018. A few years earlier, Ragna Margrét Brynjarsdóttir became the first Stjarnan player called into the national team, a mark of how far the section had come from its Ármann origins in barely a decade.

In the capital's basketball landscape, Stjarnan measures itself against Reykjavík's Valur and KR, and it is Valur, the most decorated name in Icelandic women's basketball, that supporters treat as the real test. Since returning to the top division, Stjörnukonur have yet to win the Úrvalsdeild kvenna itself, still chasing the title the second tier has given them twice a way into but never the trophy.
