Haukar Women

Five league titles have come Haukar's way, the most recent arriving in 2025, but it is the nine Icelandic Cup wins that mark the club out in Hafnarfjörður basketball, a run stretching from 1984 through to three straight finals in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

The women's section grew out of Knattspyrnufélagið Haukar, the town's multi-sport club founded on 12 April 1931, decades before a women's team took shape under coach Kolbrún Jónsdóttir in the early 1980s. That first Cup, in 1984, came within a couple of years of her taking charge.

No name carries more weight in that history than Helena Sverrisdóttir. She wore the shirt across three separate spells — 2000 to 2007, 2015 to 2018, and 2021 to 2023 — and was named Iceland's Player of the Year twelve times, a record that places her above every other woman to have played the sport in the country. Among the imports, Lele Hardy's two stints either side of the 2018 title stand out from a squad list that otherwise reads as a series of one- and two-season contracts.

Games are played at Ólafssalur, the dedicated arena inside the Ásvellir complex that opened in 2018 and took its name from Ólafur Rafnsson, once a Haukar player himself before he rose to the presidency of FIBA Europe. Seating runs to 700, though standing room has taken crowds as high as 2,000.

Valur Reykjavík has become the opponent that matters most, the two sides meeting in league finals in 2017-18, 2020-21 and again this season. In 2021-22 Haukar stepped outside domestic competition altogether, entering the EuroCup Women and beating Clube União Sportiva in qualifying — the first win by an Icelandic women's team in European play — before a fourth-place finish in the group stage closed out the run.
