Armann Women

Ármann's women play at Kennaraháskólinn, the gym belonging to the University of Iceland's School of Education in Reykjavik.

The department was founded in 1952 and lost no time making its mark: it entered the first Icelandic women's basketball championship that year and won it in 1953, then added two more titles, in 1959 and 1960. In 2000 the team merged with Þróttur to form Ármann/Þróttur, an arrangement that lasted until 2008. When it ended, dissatisfaction with facilities pushed the entire senior squad, all fourteen players, to Ungmennafélagið Stjarnan, and the Ármann women's team ceased to exist. It took until the 2017–2018 season for a side to return to the second tier, and that first campaign back produced no wins at all.

The rebuild belongs to Karl Guðlaugsson, who took over as coach in 2020 and was named Coach of the Year in both 2022 and 2025. Under him Ármann won the second-tier title in March 2022, its first championship in 62 years, then won it again in March 2025 to earn promotion to the top flight, Úrvalsdeild kvenna, for the first time in 65 years. Jónína Þórdís Karlsdóttir carried much of that run, named the second tier's Domestic Player of the Year in 2021, 2022 and 2025. Friðrik Hrafn Jóhannsson took over as head coach in 2026, and that June the club accepted a place in the top division after Hamar/Þór dissolved their partnership.

None of it changes what the gym at the School of Education has seen since 1952.
