Denain-Voltaire

The championship that Denain-Voltaire has never repeated came in 1965, when a club from a town of coal pits and steelworks in the Nord took the top flight of French basketball. It followed a double the previous season, the French Cup and promotion from the second division won together in 1959–60, and it capped the only stretch in the club's history when Les Dragons stood among the country's best. Runner-up finishes followed, in the league in 1966 and 1971, in the cup in 1958, 1966 and 1967, before the side slid back down through the 1970s and dropped out of the top tiers altogether by decade's end.

Denain kept the amateur game alive through the lean years, taking the French Cup outside the professional ranks in 1984, and did not return to the second division until 2011. That revival has produced steadier days than silverware: the Pro B Leaders Cup in 2018, and a runner-up finish in Pro B in 2024 that came without the promotion to go with it.

Hervé Dubuisson belongs to the club's one great season more than anyone else did: he debuted at fifteen and was already part of the squad that won the title in 1965. More recently, Denain has sent players on rather than kept them, Isaïa Cordinier among them, drafted by the Atlanta Hawks after coming through here before moves to Strasbourg and then abroad.

The Salle Jean Degros holds 2,500, modest even by Pro B standards, which has shaped a club built more on developing players than on filling seats. Its rivalries sit close to home, against the other basketball sides of the Nord and the Hainaut, neighbours whose derbies carry more weight locally than a league table would suggest.
