Hammarby's women play in a 400-seat hall on Farstaängsvägen in Farsta, and they are there because another club got there first. Polisen Basket (Police Basketball) already played in Farstahallen when it applied in 2015 to join Hammarby IF. Once admitted, it became the parent organisation's basketball section, with the hall, the players and the green and white colours all coming in together.

Hammarby had a basketball section before that. It was founded in 1974 and dissolved in 1985, and for 30 years the name had no team playing under it. The 2015 arrival from Farsta filled that gap.

The nickname "Bajen" is older than any of this. On a trip to England in 1946, Stig Emanuel "Stickan" Andersson pronounced Hammarby as "Hammarbaj", and the supporters took it up. The basketball section inherited it along with the nickname.

The women's team plays in Basketettan Women, the third tier of Swedish women's basketball, and has yet to win a title at that level or above. The name Hammarby basketball is linked with players who went much further. Maciej Lampe and Damir Markota reached the NBA, and Amanda Zahui reached the WNBA.

Their games are held in the same municipal sports hall in Farsta where the police side played before them.
