About
Basketettan Women serves as the second tier of women’s basketball in Sweden, operating directly below the top-flight Basketligan Dam. Organized by the Swedish Basketball Federation, the competition has been a fixture since 1992, replacing the previous Division 1 Dam structure. It is split into two regional divisions, Basketettan Norra and Basketettan Södra, which ensures local rivalries remain central to the season. The regular season follows a double round-robin format within each division. This structure allows teams to compete against every opponent in their regional group twice. The primary objective for clubs is promotion to the Basketligan Dam. This is achieved by winning the respective division, granting automatic advancement to the top level for the following campaign. Conversely, relegation sees the lowest-placed teams drop to the third tier, Division 2, ensuring competitive balance across the national pyramid. The league currently features 25 teams, with thirteen competing in the North and twelve in the South. Recent history highlights Hammarby as a dominant force in the northern region. The competition’s status is distinct from its male counterpart; while the men’s Basketettan sits at the third level, this women’s league remains the second tier. The Swedish Basketball Federation oversees all aspects of the sport, having been established in 1952. Women’s national championships date back to 1957, marking the long-standing tradition of the game in the country. Teams such as Blackeberg Women, Brahe 2 Women, Fryshuset Basket Women, Hammarby Women, Huddinge Women, and IK Eos Utveckling Women participate in the current season. The league maintains an official online presence at basket.se for updates and standings.
