Kormend Egis

The Kristóf László Városi Sportcsarnok holds a little over two thousand people. Its current name is a recent change, made to carry forward the memory of László Kristóf, the teacher credited with laying the foundations of the club in 1962.

What Körmend built on that foundation was a run of championships that, for a club from a town of its size, has no real equal in Hungarian basketball. The national title came three times, in 1986–87, 1995–96 and 2002–03, and the Hungarian Cup seven times between 1990 and 2016. In Europe the club never broke through to a trophy, though a Round of 16 finish in the FIBA Europe Cup, reached in back-to-back seasons, marked the ceiling of what it managed there. The Alpe Adria Cup, won in 2018–19, sits as the one continental prize on the shelf.

Adam Hanga passed through here before the top clubs of Europe came calling. Csaba Ferencz stayed the course over many years and a national team career, the kind of long service that gives a small club its backbone. Against Zalakerámia ZTE, the fixture known locally as the örökrangadó, the eternal derby, is where the club's identity sharpens most, a rivalry built on geography as much as on the standings.

All of it traces back to the same sports hall and the same teacher whose name it now bears, the point from which a club in a town of a few thousand people built a record most bigger cities in Hungary never matched.
