Medveščak Zagreb Women

Basketball resumed in Zagreb in June 1945, when a women's section formed under the name Slavija Zagreb, before settling on Medveščak in 1961, taking the identity that has carried it since.

Before that streak began, the club had come close once already, losing the 2009 Cup final. In 2016 it went further than usual, reaching the WABA League final.

Much of that success traces to a group of players who came through together, known locally as the Medveščakova generacija 1993./1994. Nina Premasunac, named MVP of the league in 2016, and Ružica Džankić, who wore the Croatian national team shirt in 2015 and 2016, both belong to that generation, alongside Iva Borović, who played at the 2015 EuroBasket.

The team, nicknamed Medice, plays in yellow and blue at ŠD Pešćenica. Its fiercest fixture comes against ŽKK Trešnjevka 2009 in the Zagreb derby. What began as a women's section attached to a club called Slavija is the same team that still takes the court as Medveščak today.
