Nanterre U21

Victor Wembanyama came through Nanterre's academy, one of a run of prospects — Jules Bravin, Noa Calabre, Lucas Fischer, Simeon Kalemba among them — that the club's Centre de Formation has produced since it opened its doors in September 2007. The Espoirs side that shaped them plays in the LNB Espoirs U21 league.

What the young players train under is a senior club, Nanterre 92, that has actually won things — the Pro A title in 2013, the French Cup twice, a FIBA EuroChallenge — and that history sets the bar the Espoirs are measured against rather than one they have met themselves. The rivalry the whole club shares with Paris Basketball, the "Derby francilien," belongs to that senior picture too, but it is the kind of fixture a promoted academy player eventually gets to feel from the other side of the ball.

The academy operates in the shadow of Paris rather than apart from it, in a city, Nanterre, that sits just west of the capital in the Île-de-France region the derby is named for. Matches are played at the Palais des Sports Maurice-Thorez, a ground that holds 3,000 for basketball — modest by senior standards, and smaller still against the weight of what has already walked out of it.
