Strasbourg U21

That path is the point of the U21 team: a feeder line running under SIG Strasbourg, competing not for the senior club's silverware but in the Championnat de France Espoirs, the national U21 competition that has existed since 1988.

The Espoirs train and play out of Rhenus Sport, sharing the arena's 6,166 seats with the first team on the nights schedules allow, in the same red and white the club has carried since the basketball section split off from the wider Strasbourg sports association in 1929. There is no separate birth certificate for the U21 side beyond that: it exists because the senior club needs one, and it answers to the same badge.

What the academy has to show for itself came in 2015, when Strasbourg's Espoirs beat Gravelines-Dunkerque to the French U21 title, a result that still gets mentioned when the club talks about what the pipeline can produce. A runner-up finish at the Trophée du Futur has followed more recently, signalling the group has not gone quiet since.

None of it means as much locally as the Derby de l'Est. When Strasbourg's youngsters line up against SLUC Nancy, the fixture carries the weight of the wider rivalry between the two clubs, and for players still building a reputation, beating Nancy's academy is often the first result anyone outside the region notices.
