A capital city needs a team to send into the regional competitions that matter in the Balkans, and Podgorica did not have one in basketball until 2007, when KK Podgorica was put together and took to the court in light blue and white.

The club built its case at home first. Bemax Arena , its ground, holds 2,000 — small enough that a home game there feels close, whatever the level of the visiting side.

Where KK Podgorica has made its clearest mark is in the ABA League 2, the second tier of the regional competition that draws clubs from across the former Yugoslavia. The club reached the semi-finals there in 2020/21, in 2022/23 and again in 2023/24.
