On 31 May 2014 San Martín beat Instituto Atlético Central Córdoba 3–0 in the promotion finals and went back up to the Liga Nacional de Básquetbol. The club had been there once before, having won promotion for the first time in 2011 under Ariel Rearte, against Ciclista Juninense. This second climb came under Sebastián González, and this time San Martín de Corrientes stayed.

The club is older than its basketball. It began in 1932 as the Robson Tenis Club. In 1943 it took the name San Martín, and the reason was practical: the government made the change a condition of donating the land at Mariano Moreno 901, where the headquarters still stand.

The first return to the top flight was followed by a run of finals. In 2015 the side reached the Liga Sudamericana de Clubes final and lost to UniCEUB/BRB of Brasília 2–0 in a best-of-three, with the first game going to overtime, 94–92, and the second finishing 82–79. In 2017 it won the Copa Súper 20, beating Instituto 83–74. That is a pre-season tournament rather than the league title, but it was the club's first national trophy in the elite category. The 2017–18 season ended in the Liga Nacional final, which San Lorenzo won 4–2. In 2022 the club lost another South American final, 66–57 to Bauru Basquete Clube. The league championship and the Copa Argentina de Básquetbol are still missing.

Home is the Estadio Raúl Argentino Ortiz, opened in 1960, with about 2,500 seats. Supporters call it "El Fortín Rojinegro", the red-and-black fort, and the club's nickname, El Fortín, comes from it. Gastón García captained the team for years, and Justin Keenan played here in 2019–20 before moving on to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA.

The local rival is Regatas Corrientes. Both clubs are from the same city, and their meetings are called the Clásico Correntino.
