Liga A serves as the top-tier professional basketball league in Argentina. Established in 1985 by coach León Najnudel and journalist Osvaldo Orcasitas, it replaced the amateur Campeonato Argentino de Clubes to professionalize the sport. The competition is organized by the Asociación de Clubes (AdC), a body distinct from the national federation, the Confederación Argentina de Básquetbol (CABB). The league sits at the apex of the Argentine basketball pyramid. Below it lies the second tier, La Liga Argentina, which feeds into Liga A through promotion rules where the champion advances directly and the runner-up plays a playoff series for the final spot. At the other end, the last-placed team faces the second-to-last side in a best-of-5 permanencia series, with the loser relegated to the second division. Lig A currently features 18 teams competing in a regular season that follows a double round-robin format. Each club plays every other team twice, resulting in 34 games per side. The top 12 teams then qualify for the playoffs. This postseason includes a preliminary reclassification round for seeds five through 12, followed by quarterfinals and semifinals, all held as best-of-5 series. The finals are contested as a best-of-7 series. Atenas de Córdoba holds the record for success with nine titles, while notable champions also include San Lorenzo and Peñarol de Mar del Plata, each with five. The current champion is Boca Juniors, who secured the title by defeating Instituto de Córdoba 4-3 in the finals. The league distinguishes itself from other Argentine competitions by being the sole top-flight professional entity. Its winner qualifies for the FIBA Champions League Americas. Unlike football, there is no major parallel basketball cup that rivals the league's status, making the title the primary objective for clubs.
