La Union Formosa

Basketball in Formosa had a top-division team once before, but the province never had its own club there until a former Regatas Corrientes player, Mario Romay, decided to build one. He put the project together with backing from Carlos Delasoie, president of La Unión de Colón, and from the provincial government under Governor Gildo Insfrán, folding in Club Estudiantes de Formosa and buying Colón's spot in the Torneo Nacional de Ascenso. The new club took its name from that alliance — "La Unión" was meant to stand for every basketball club in Formosa, not just the one wearing the shirt.

It was founded on 5 August 2004, and the 2004-05 Torneo Nacional de Ascenso title made La Unión de Formosa, known to its own fans as La U, the first team from the province to reach the top flight of Argentine basketball. Blue and white, the colours of the Formosa provincial flag, have stayed the club's colours since.

A championship has not followed since promotion, but the near misses have carried weight of their own. In 2012 the club reached the final four of the Liga de las Américas and finished runner-up.

No player is tied more closely to the club's name in Formosa than Walter Herrmann, an Olympic bronze medallist with Argentina at Athens 2004, who wore La U's shirt during his career.
