About the player
Joseph Opoku was named Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month for April 2026, in a season that brought him 33 appearances and 10 goals for Zulte Waregem.
He arrived at Zulte Waregem in August 2024 from Great Corinthians FC in Accra, where he had started out. His first games in Belgium came for the reserve side, Jong Essevee, in the Challenger Pro League, but the stay there was short and he soon moved up to the first team. Across the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons he made 59 appearances and scored 13 goals. In the first of those seasons Zulte Waregem won the Challenger Pro League title and earned promotion to the Belgian Pro League, so his second year came in the top division.
Swansea City signed him on 23 July 2026 on a four-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months. The reported fee was €6.5 million plus €800,000 in add-ons, and Zulte Waregem kept a 15% sell-on clause. In the EFL Championship he has made seven appearances and scored twice so far.
His international career has run alongside the club moves. Opoku won four caps and scored once for Ghana at U20 level and played in the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. He made his senior debut in May 2026 in a friendly against Mexico. He was in Ghana's preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but was not in the final group.
