About the player
Mathieu Cafaro came through the Toulouse academy, working his way from the reserve team to a Ligue 1 debut for the senior side in 2015. His time there ended in 2017 after an incident involving an airsoft gun led to his release.
He moved to Stade de Reims, where he won a Ligue 2 title in 2017–18 despite making only a single appearance that season. A transfer to Standard Liège followed for a reported fee of €250,000, before he joined AS Saint-Étienne on loan in July 2022 with an option to buy. Saint-Étienne exercised that option a year later, signing him permanently for €500,000.
It was at Saint-Étienne that Cafaro produced the moment he is best remembered for: a volley against FC Annecy during the 2022–23 season that was voted the UNFP Ligue 2 Best Goal of the Season.
He left Saint-Étienne for Paris FC on 3 February 2025, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract. Playing time in Ligue 1 proved harder to come by at his new club, a factor that eventually led to his departure to FC Nantes, where he signed a two-year deal.
