About the player
He started out at Barrow and Holker Old Boys as a youngster before beginning his senior career at Furness Rovers in 2021, then moved to Holker Old Boys that June while also turning out for Lancaster City under a dual-registration arrangement. Chester took him on a non-contract basis in January 2022 and handed him a one-year deal that summer, but the season that followed him around county football came largely through loans — spells at FC United of Manchester, at Bootle, and at Macclesfield Town, where he was part of the squad that won the Northern Premier League Division One West.
During the 2023–24 season he played every minute in goal and kept 22 clean sheets, form that was recognised with the club's Away Travel Player of the Season award.
He was named Player of the Match on his EFL debut, a game against Grimsby Town, and produced another standout display against Walsall, making 11 saves. His form in April 2025 earned him a place in the EFL Team of the Week. At Barrow he was voted Young Player of the Season for 2024–25 and won the Lancashire Senior Cup. Stanway also made his England C debut in March 2024, coming off the bench against Wales C. Away from football, he has represented Cumbria at senior level in cricket.
