The club grew out of a group of shop workers in Buenos Aires who settled on forming a team on 4 August 1904; the side took the field as Independiente Foot-Ball Club from 1 January 1905. It moved out to the suburb of Crucecita in 1907 and did not settle in Avellaneda itself until 1928.
The switch from white shirts to red also dates to 1907. Two accounts of it survive: one credits president Aristeides Langoni's admiration for Nottingham Forest, the other traces the colour to secretary Julio Mantecón and the symbolism of the workers' movement.
What followed earned the club its nickname, El Rey de Copas — the King of Cups. Independiente has won the Copa Libertadores seven times and the Intercontinental Cup twice. Ricardo Bochini sat at the centre of that run, scoring 132 goals in 638 matches for the club between 1972 and 1992 and sharing in four of those Libertadores titles. Jorge Burruchaga scored the winning goal in the 1984 final; he and Daniel Bertoni, Bochini's regular partner up front, both went on to win the World Cup with Argentina in 1986. Arsenio Erico remains the club's leading scorer overall, with 293 goals between 1934 and 1946.
The stadium took Bochini's name in December 2021, becoming the Estadio Libertadores de América – Ricardo Enrique Bochini. The club itself belongs to its members, more than 160,000 socios, rather than to any single owner.
The domestic record tells a different story: Independiente's last Primera División title came in 2002.
