Ipswich

Terry Butcher played centre-back for Ipswich through the whole of the club's brightest run, and it says something about the era that his name still comes up before any trophy does. The club he joined had grown out of an 1878 amateur side, Ipswich A.F.C., reshaped ten years later when it merged with the town's rugby club and took the name it has carried since. By the time Butcher was marshalling the defence at Portman Road, Ipswich had already gone from the Southern League title in 1936/37 to the League championship in 1961/62, won under Alf Ramsey in the club's first season back in the top flight.

The team Butcher played in reached further. Bobby Robson's side beat Arsenal to win the FA Cup in 1978, then went on to take the UEFA Cup in 1981, still the club's one European trophy. Those two campaigns sit either side of back-to-back second-place league finishes, in 1980/81 and 1981/82 — the closest Ipswich came to a second title.

Portman Road itself has been rebuilt in stages rather than all at once: a reworking of the North and South Stands in 2001-02 took capacity past 30,000 for the first time, and a further upgrade completed in 2024, covering floodlighting, changing rooms and media facilities, brought it to its current 30,056 to meet Premier League ground requirements. None of the club's other honours quite match 1978 and 1981 for weight, though the Football League Cup final defeat to Manchester City in 1964 and the 2004 play-off final loss to West Ham United mark how narrowly the club has missed further silverware since.

Mick Mills, who captained Ipswich through the FA Cup and UEFA Cup wins, still holds the appearance record: 741 games.
